Board of Commissioners, 1983-1987; Lincoln City Council, 1989-1991; mayor of Lincoln, Nebr., 1991-1998; governor of Nebraska, 1999-2005; Secretary of Agriculture in the Cabinet of President George W. Bush, 2005-2007; elected as a Republican to the United States Senate in 2008 for the term ending January 3, 2015.
